Fourth Quarter Comeback Secures 19-18 Win at Upper Iowa to Maintain GLVC Lead

FAYETTE, IOWA - The William Jewell football team scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including a field goal with less than 30 seconds to go, to win 19-18 on the road at Upper Iowa University. The victory moves the Cardinals to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference to remain atop the league standings alongside Truman State.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Jewell got on the board first as Bleu Renfrow connected on a 28-yard field goal just inside the start of the second period. After an Upper Iowa punt pinned the Cardinals at their own one-yard line a run play ended with a tackle inside the end zone, giving the Peacocks their first points with a safety. UIU followed with two big pass plays to add two scores before the intermission and held a 15-3 advantage at the break.

The home team added a 34-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to take a 15-point lead but the Cardinals used an eight-plus minute drive to close the third quarter before scoring on a one-yard run by Isaiah Julian on the first play of the final period. With just over eight minutes to go, Hunter Bailey made it a one possession game with a 32-yard touchdown run but the two-point conversion failed allowing the Peacocks to maintain an 18-16 lead.

Upper Iowa ran the clock down to under 90 seconds before punting on 4th-and-22. The punt was blocked by Jewell's Raesean Eaton and returned 23 yards to set the Cardinals up inside the Peacock 20. After three plays to down the clock further, Renfrow converted a 30-yard field to put Jewell in front. With 23 second to work with, UIU attempted a hail mary pass that was intercepted by Zyaryen Hall to secure the win.
