BRANSON, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team went 1-2 in a three game series with Winona State over the weekend, winning 13-8 before falling 2-0 and 6-0. The Cardinals move to 1-7 on the season.
Game 1: Jewell 13, Winona State 8
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winona State plated five runs on just one hit in the opening inning of the weekend, taking advantage of five free passes from Cardinal pitching before blasting a grand slam.
- Jewell rallied in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on six hits and a Warrior error to knot things up. With the bases loaded, Avery Webster's sac fly plated the first Cardinal run before Mikayla Chariez, Lexi Lopez, and Emma Jane Ogle each had a hit to score the other four.
- The Warriors went back in front with two runs in the fourth but Tori Woodard's RBI single in the bottom half got one of those runs back.
- Reagan Bennett led off the following frame with a solo shot to left field to tie the game at seven before Lopez stepped to the plate with two runners on and blasted her first long ball of the season, a three-run shot, to put Jewell on top, 10-7.
- WSU got one run in the top half of the sixth but RBI base hits from three players, including a triple by Webster scored three more for the Cardinals as they rolled to the 13-8 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals pounded out 17 hits in the victory, their highest single game total since April 19, 2015 when Jewell had 19 in a win over Wisconsin Parkside.
- Chairez and Lopez led the way with three with the latter driving in five runs.
- Katie Heckman (1-1) got the win in the circle, allowing just a single base runner in 1.1 innings of work while Avrey Reynolds picked up her first save of the season.
Game 2: Winona State 2, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After all the offense in the opener, game two was a pitcher's dual with only 11 combined hits. The Warriors got a single run in the first and added another in the fifth with the game's only runs.
- The Cardinals put two in scoring position in the sixth inning but came up empty.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Chairez finished with two hits while Ogle and Webster had one each.
- Reagan Bennett (0-3) took the loss, allowing just one earned run on four hits over 3.1 innings.
Game 3: Winona State 6, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winona State scored three runs over the first two innings on just two hits to take the early lead. They added a single run in each of the final three frames to win, 6-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Chairez again led the offense with two hits while Woodard and Alexa Almejo had one, including a double by the latter.
- Avrey Reynolds (0-1) allowed two earned runs over two innings to suffer the loss in the circle.
