Six-Run Inning Puts Warriors Over Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team lost their opening game versus  the Winona State University Warriors on Friday afternoon, 8-5. The loss drops Jewell to an even 2-2 on the season. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got on the board first with a Luke Isaacs RBI single that scored Ilyas van den Bos in the third. 
  • Winona plated runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead midway through the game.
  • Jewell responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixith inning after a culmination of wild pitches allowed for Isaacs, Santiago Jimenez, and Justin George all to score and go up 4-2.
  • The Warriors scored six runs in the following half-inning to go up 8-4. A late RBI single from Luke Bies to score Rui Yoshida was not enough as the Warriors held on, 8-5.

KEY STATS
  • Taylor Brenneman went 6.1 innings, punching out five, giving up six hits in his second Cardinal start. Drew Caudle tosses 2.0 innings, striking out three and not allowing a run.
  • Both teams collected six hits, with a combined 11 singles between the teams. On the mound the pitching staffs combined for 20 total strikeouts, with nine being thrown by Cardinal pitchers.

UP NEXT
Cardinals will take the field Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM to continue the series versus Winona. Due to cold weather, teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
