LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team won the second half on Thursday night but Rockhurst's fast start allowed the Hawks to take the 89-71 win and snap Jewell's eight game winning streak. The Cardinals fall to 13-8 overall and 9-4 in conference play, while the Hawks, who are receiving votes in the national poll improve to 17-5 and 11-3. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• With Rockhurst leading 11-7 early, the Cardinals went five minutes without a point, committing six turnovers, as the Hawks opened up a double digit lead. Layups from Ashton Jermain and Justice Sutton slowed Rockhurst temporarily but the home team closed the half on a 24-9 run and held a 29-point advantage at the break.   
• After the Hawks extended their lead to as many as 31 early in the second period, Jewell made a push, using a 25-16 run to get back within 21 with under 10 minutes to play. Rockhurst maintained their advantage, however, until three straight triples from Ty Romero late got the deficit back under 20 to close the game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Jewell got 33 points from the bench, led by Jermain's 19 while Romero had nine. 
• Sutton and Bradley Lightbourne each finished with 12 points. 
• Jewell shot 46% for the game but just 33% in the first half, compared to Rockhurst's 56% allowing the Hawks to build the early lead.
• Jermain and Isaac Patterson had a team high six rebounds.

Jewell will look to get back on track on Saturday as they head to Southwest Baptist for a 3 p.m. match up with the Bearcats.
