Softball Opens Season at Alvy Early Classic

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - The William Jewell softball team opened the 2026 season on Friday morning at the Alvy Early Classic, hosted by Arkansas Monticello. The Cardinals dropped their openers, 10-4 to Emporia State and 9-1 to St. Edward's University (Texas). 

Game 1: Emporia State 10, Jewell 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell jumped out to the big lead in the opener as Avery Webster doubled and scored on Mikayla Chairez's home run. Back-to-back singles from Lexi Lopez and Amanda Chung put two on for Tori Woodard who doubled to right field and made it 4-0, Cardinals.
  • The Hornets got back in the game in the bottom half of the third inning with four runs on four hits. 
  • Emporia State added three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to take the season opener. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Chung finished with a team best three hits while Chairez, Lopez, and Webster all had two.
  • Reagan Bennett (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle with four earned runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings in relief. 

Game 2: St. Edward's 9, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals again took the early lead in the third inning as Emma Jane Ogle's solo homer put Jewell on the board first. 
  • St. Edward's plate five runs in the bottom half and added two in the fourth before a walk off RBI double ended the game after six innings, 9-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell was limited to just four hits in the second game of the day, those coming from Ogle, Chairez, Webster, and Alexa Almejo
  • Katie Heckman (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing five earned runs with three strikeouts over three innings of work.

UP NEXT
Jewell continues tournament play on Saturday with match ups against Washburn and St. Mary's (Texas) at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
