LIBERTY, Mo. – Cardinal baseball had to readjust their schedule due to impending weather on Sunday, therefore playing a pair of conference games versus the University of Illinois Springfield on Friday. William Jewell dropped both games to open up GLVC action on the season, falling 3-15 in game one before a 4-11 loss in game two. Jewell is 4-12 on the year and 0-2 in GLVC play.
Game 1 (Jewell 3, Illinois Springfield 15)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Illinois-Springfield plated eight runs in the first four innings before a two-run double to right field from Ilyas van den Bos put Jewell on the board.
- Down 12-2 in the seventh inning, Maddox Meier blasted a solo-homer to left centerfield to avoid being run-ruled in the inning, but one frame later the Prairie Stars scored three and ended the game in the eighth, 15-3.
KEY STATS
- Taylor Brenneman started, giving up eight runs and striking out three.
- Meier went 2-for-3 with a homer, his second this year.
- Jewell was out-hit, 15-to-6.
Game 2 (Jewell 4, Illinois Springfield 11)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Prairie Stars scored a run in the first, Mason Jeffers answered back with a groundout that scored left fielder Maddox Meier from third to tie the game.
- Illinois Springfield scored eight runs in the middle innings being an RBI single from Justin George scored Luke Bies to make it 9-2.
- Down 11-2 in the bottom of the seventh Bies rocked a two-run homer to left to make it 11-4 but that was as close as the Cardinals came.
KEY STATS
- Charlie Rambo took the mound in game two, going only four innings while allowing six runs.
- On the day Jewell was out-hit 27-to-9, including a 15-to-6 mark in the second half.
- The starts by Josiah Hussey in right and Jack Lemasters at third were the first Jewell starts for each of the first year members of the program.
