Cardinals Swept By Prairie Stars

LIBERTY, Mo. – Wiliam Jewell baseball dropped both games of their Saturday doubleheader versus the No. 25 Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars, 9-1 in the first game followed by a 15-5 loss in game two. Jewell is 4-15 on the year and 0-4 in GLVC play. Jewell has now lost 11 straight.

Game 1 (Jewell 1, Illinois Springfield 9)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A three-run homer in the first inning put the Prairie Stars up early, followed by another three-run shot in the second inning to have a 6-0 lead after two innings.
  • Down 7-0 in the fifth, left fielder Maddox Meier ripped a double down the left field line scoring Luke Bies from second to get Jewell on the board.
  • The only other baserunner Jewell got was Austin Dahlberg who stole second after a single in the sixth inning, dropping game three 9-1.

Game 2 (Jewell 5, Illinois Springfield 15)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell was retired in order for the first three innings before loading the bases in the fourth inning when Isaac Lager was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to walk in the Cardinals' first run of the day to make it 6-1.
  • In the fifth Luke Bies mashed a homer over the left field bullpen to cut the lead to four runs.
  • Pinch-hitting to lead-off the seventh, Luke Isaacs drew a walk followed by a base hit to center by Mason Jeffers. Freshman outfielder Bronson Ryan was hit on the first pitch to load the bases. Bies then doubled to center to clear the bags and pull Jewell within one, 6-5.
  • Though the Cardinals loaded the bags in the bottom of the eighth, a Illinois-Springfield nine-run top of the eighth inning secured the series sweep for the Prairie Stars, 15-5.

KEY STATS
  • Nick Taylor started on the mound for the Cardinals, his second start of the week. The lefty tossed 3.2 innings, walking three and allowing five runs.
  • Bies was 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, one from his fifth homer of the year and three from the bases-clearing double in the seventh inning rally.
