ST. LOUIS - The William Jewell men's lacrosse team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Monday afternoon at No. 7 ranked Maryville. The Saints used a 10 goal first quarter to roll to a 23-9 win and drop the Cardinals to 6-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Maryville scored the game's first eight goals before Olivier LaPlante got the Cardinals on the board with a man-up score off a feed from Brenner Mitts. Jewell got a turnover that led to a Hudson Parnell score midway through the second period but Maryville led big at the break, 17-2. 
• The Cardinals got back-to-back goals from LaPlante and Carson Wright to open the third quarter with momentum and added another late to outscore the Saints 3-2 in the frame. Jewell scored four goals in the final period from Mitts, Wright, LaPlante, and Seth Heath, but the early lead was too large to overcome. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Jewell was out shot 51-22 and were 18-of-22 on clears. 
• LaPlante led the offense with three goals while Wright added two scores and one assist. 
• Mitts finished with five ground balls, two caused turnovers, one goal, and one assist. 
• Isaac Kessler took the loss in cage, grabbing 11 assists.
