ST. LOUIS – Wiliam Jewell baseball dropped both games in a doubleheader on the road versus Maryville University on Saturday afternoon, 2-8 in game one followed by a 3-8 loss in game two. Jewell is 6-20 on the year following the two losses, while posting a 2-9 GLVC record.
Game 1 (Jewell 2, Maryville 8)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning with a Luke Isaacs RBI single that scored lead-off man Bronson Ryan drew a walk to start the game. Later in the frame catcher Mason Jeffers grounded out to plate another run to take a 2-0 lead.
- Cardinals held a 2-1 lead into the fifth until a three-run inning for the Saints gave them a 4-2 lead.
- Jewell went three-up three-down in the sixth before Maryville plated four insurance runs to take game one, 8-2.
KEY STATS
- Charlie Rambo got the start, receiving the loss after tossing four innings, allowing five hits.
- Luke Bies and Josiah Hussey each notched a double, while Jewell batters totaled only four strikeouts.
Game 2 (Jewell 3, Maryville 7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Similarly to the first game of the day Jewell got on the board first, this time it was via a Maddox Meier homer, a three-run shot to left-center to make it 3-0 in the fourth.
- Jewell allowed six runs in the bottom of the frame to fall behind 6-3. The Cardinals only saw three baserunners in the final three innings combined, ultimately falling 8-3.
KEY STATS
- Nick Taylor got the start on the bump, leaving with 3.1 IP, allowing four runs, and walking two.
- Jewell was out-hit five-to-12.
- Left fielder Meier's homer was his third of the season.
