LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team pushed their win streak to five on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Quincy University. The Cardinals took game one, 6-3, before rallying late for a 5-2 win in the nightcap. Jewell improves to 15-19 overall and 6-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Game 1: Jewell 6, Quincy 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals struck first in the opener as Emma Jane Ogle blasted a solo home run to center in bottom half of the second inning. After a walk to Sheyenne Kelch, Avery Webster tripled to add another run before scoring herself on Mikayla Chairez's RBI base hit.
- Quincy used a bases loaded triple by Kaidence Dumas to knot things up at 3-all in the fourth but Reagan Bennett got a strikeout to leave the go-ahead run on third base.
- Claudia Robbins led off the bottom half with a double and scored on an error to put the Cardinals back in front, 4-3.
- Jewell added two insurance runs in the sixth, as Kelch and Chairez both scored as the Hawks made plays on runners at first base to push the lead to three.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals out hit Quincy, 9-4, with Chairez finishing with three.
- Bennett (6-7) picked up the win, tossing four strong frames with three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
- Katie Heckman came on in relief to earn her first save of the year with three innings of shutout work.
Game 2: Jewell 5, Quincy 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quincy jumped in front in game two, with a pair of runs in the second inning, despite just one hit.
- Chairez homered in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit in half before the senior led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a sac fly to tie the game at two.
- In the same inning, an error, single, and hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs for Heckman who, in just her seventh at bat all season, roped a three-run double over the head of the left fielder to put Jewell in front for good, 5-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- In addition to the team high three RBI, Heckman earned the win in the circle, working two scoreless frames in relief. Olivia Wood put together a solid start, striking out over five innings.
- Chairez again led the offense with three hits while scoring twice.
