Jewell Drops Pair to Illinois Springfield

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Illinois Springfield

Game 1: UIS 5, Jewell 2
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Illinois Springfield took advantage of a couple of free passes to score two runs without a hit in the first inning and take the early lead.
  • The Cardinals cut the lead in half in the third as Alexa Almejo doubled and stole third before scoring  on a bloop single from Sheyenne Kelch.
  • In the fourth, the Stars loaded the bases and scored on a fielder's choice and added single runs in the fifth and the seventh to expand their lead to 5-1.
  • In the bottom half of the seventh, the Cardinals put two in scoring position with a walk followed by a double from Emma Jane Ogle. A ground out to the right side scored one but a strikeout ended the threat.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Kelch finished with two of the Cardinals four hits on the game while driving in a run.
  • Almejo had one hit, one RBI, and scored once.
  • Reagan Bennett (6-8) took the loss in the circle, working seven frames, allowing four earned runs on four hits while striking out four.
