LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Illinois Springfield
Game 1: UIS 5, Jewell 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Illinois Springfield took advantage of a couple of free passes to score two runs without a hit in the first inning and take the early lead.
- The Cardinals cut the lead in half in the third as Alexa Almejo doubled and stole third before scoring on a bloop single from Sheyenne Kelch.
- In the fourth, the Stars loaded the bases and scored on a fielder's choice and added single runs in the fifth and the seventh to expand their lead to 5-1.
- In the bottom half of the seventh, the Cardinals put two in scoring position with a walk followed by a double from Emma Jane Ogle. A ground out to the right side scored one but a strikeout ended the threat.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kelch finished with two of the Cardinals four hits on the game while driving in a run.
- Almejo had one hit, one RBI, and scored once.
- Reagan Bennett (6-8) took the loss in the circle, working seven frames, allowing four earned runs on four hits while striking out four.
Game 2:
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Stars broke things open in the top of the second, scoring four runs on four hits and added another in the following frame on a solo home run to center.
- UIS got an RBI single from Sidney Sawyer in the sixth before a stolen base, allowed another to cross for the final of 7-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell was out hit 12-3 with Kelch, Lexi Lopez, and Amanda Chung each having a base hit.
- Olivia Wood (3-4) took the loss, working four innings with five earned runs on seven hits.
