Cardinals Rally to Take Game Two Over Bearcats

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team picked up a split at Southwest Baptist on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1 in the opener before rallying multiple times to take the nightcap 11-10. The Cardinals improve to 17-25 overall and 8-12 in conference play.

Game 1: Southwest Baptist 3, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the fourth inning, the Bearcats took advantage of an error and two wild pitches to plate three and take the lead.
  • Mikayla Chairez blasted a solo home run in the top of the fifth to get Jewell on the board but that would be all the runs either team could muster.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals were limited to four hits in the opener, with two by Tori Woodard, including a double.
  • Reagan Bennett (6-11) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits.

Game 2: Jewell 11, Southwest Baptist 10
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bearcats jumped out in front early as two home runs in the opening frame put the home team on top 5-0.
  • In the third, Jewell got back in the game as Chairez sent her second home run of the day over the fence, followed by a triple from Lexi Lopez who scored on an ensuing error. The Cardinals added two more on a sac fly and ground out to pull within one.
  • Woodard tied the game in the fourth with a base knock to center before Lopez scored again on a ground out RBI by Emma Jane Ogle gave the Cardinals their first lead, 6-5.
  • The game continued to go back and forth as SBU scored twice only to see Alexa Almejo homer to lead off the fifth and knot things up at 7-all.
  • A three-run home run by SBUs Emily Titus gave the Bearcats a cushion down the stretch but Jewell took advantage of two errors in the sixth to manufacture four runs and retake the lead, 11-10.
  • SBU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Katie Heckman struck out two and got a ground ball to end the threat.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell finished with 15 hits, their third highest total this season, led by three a piece from Woodard and Bennett, while Almejo drove in four runs
  • Heckman (4-6) earned the win in relief, tossing four frames, allowing three runs on two hits with two clutch strikeouts.
