Jewell Splits Doubleheader Day With Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – William Jewell baseball won their first game of their doubleheader with Rockhurst on Friday, 7-2, before dropping game two 11-10. Jewell is 15-34 and 9-22 headed into the final day of the regular season.

Game 1 (Jewell 7, Rockhurst 2)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Luke Bies doubled to left center to score Justin George in the top of the first for Jewell to take a 1-0 lead. After the Hawks tied it up in the fourth a Koen Gakstatter RBI single plated Hayden Post to break the tie.
  • Later in the inning a two-run single from George added insurance to make it 4-1.
  • The Hawks answered with a run of their own in the sixth but Maddox Meier and Santiago Jimenez each contributed in the top of the seventh for three combined RBIs for the 7-2 game one win.

KEY STATS
  • Taylor Brenneman got the win for Jewell, going five innings with four punchouts before closer Ryan Hunt finished things out.
  • Seven of the nine in Jewell's batting order collected a hit, while Jimenez and George each notched a pair or RBIs.

Game 2 (Jewell 10, Rockhurst 11)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the third straight game of the series Jewell plated first inning runs, this time again by Luke Bies whose double made it 2-0 Jewell.
  • Rockhurst responded in the same inning with three runs to take the lead. Jewell answered in the second when Hayden Post struck out swinging, but the wild pitch allowed for a run to cross home to knot the game up at three all. Another Hawk wild pitch scored Ilyas van den Bos before a sac fly scored Post for the 5-3 lead.
  • After a Blake Tigges RBI single in the fifth that made it 9-7 Rockhurst, Jewell began a sixth inning rally that saw three runs via a pair of singles and a sac fly to take the one run lead, 10-9, but two Hawk runs in the bottom of the seventh walked it of for Rockhurst in game three of the series.

KEY STATS
  • Getting the start was Charlie Rambo who struck out only one. Jack Lemasters was tagged with the loss in relief after 3.1 IP.
  • Though Jewell collected three more hits, the Cardinals struckout four more times than Rockhurst.
