KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team dropped their Great Lakes Valley Conference Opener on Friday night at crosstown rival Rockhurst, 3-1. The Cardinals fall to 1-11 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
The hosts jumped out to a big 17-7 lead midway through the opening set before a block by
Wylie Singleton and
Kali Adamec stopped the skid and propelled Jewell to a 7-2 run. Rockhurst used a 6-3 run to close the set, 25-17. The Cardinals responded in set two, taking a 16-11 lead after back-to-back aces from
Ashlynn Rowland. The Hawks pulled back within three late but a Singleton led a 5-1 run with two aces and a block to take the set 25-19.
After Rockhurst took set three, they broke out to an 18-10 advantage in the fourth frame and looked like they would pull away but the Cardinals had something else in mind. Jewell rallied with an 11-2 run to go in front, 21-20 for their first lead of the set. Despite the Cardinal comeback, Rockhurst closed the set on a 5-1 run to put things away.
