Cards Fall to Southwest Baptist in Homecoming Contest

Box Score

After two weeks on the road, the William Jewell Cardinal football team returned home to Greene Stadium on Saturday for the 2011 Homecoming game against the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats.

The Cardinals started very strong on both sides of the ball. In the first half, Jewell's offense began their attack with an outstanding running game led by freshman running back Glen Whitney and senior back Chris Stuart, who would end the game with a combined 169 yards on the ground. Although the Cardinals were unable to put points on the board, the offense had a very productive first half, but only had two failed field goal attempts to show for it.

William Jewell's defense also played a solid first half, holding a very potent Bearcat offense scoreless until late in the second quarter. While the Bearcats racked up 370 total yards from scrimmage, the Cardinal defense was able to stand strong for most of the game.

After the half, the Cardinals stuck to the game plan and continued to pound the ball with their two top running backs. The defense also came out and played a great third quarter, not allowing their opponents to continue the momentum they built from the second quarter. However, after a scoreless third quarter, the Bearcats put the game out of reach midway through the fourth quarter, stretching the lead to 35-0, which would end up being the final score of the game.

The Cardinal offensive leaders were senior running back Chris Stuart, who finished the game with 87 rushing yards on 11 carries, and junior wide receiver Jon Molzen who caught four passes for 51 yards. Sophomore quarterback Sean Shelton would finish the game with 19 completions for 128 yards on 34 attempts.

The defensive leaders for William Jewell were freshman linebacker Eric Jackson and sophomore linebacker Jason Carmichael. Each player had four unassisted tackles and Eric Jackson also had the only Jewell sack of the game. Senior linebacker Nelson Windebank also had an impressive outing with seven assisted tackles.

With a record of 1-5, the Cardinals have a bye week next week. They will return to action Saturday, October 22nd at 1:00 p.m. against Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo.-Story by Kurt Hixson
