Cards Fall 24-6 to Urbana

Box Score Box Score

After a week off, the William Jewell Cardinals fell 24-6 in action against fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference football provisional member, the Urbana Blue Knights today at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Mo.

The Cardinal's continued their streak of impressive defensive play today after junior defensive end Tyler Bullis forced a fumble on the first drive of the game. The defense would continue to have a solid game only giving up three touchdowns to a team that has put up a total of 55 points in its previous two outings.

On Jewell's first play from scrimmage, they opened up the playbook and ran a double reverse pass from backup quarterback DJ Balaz to starting quarterback Sean Shelton, which gained more than 20 yards. With the ball deep in Urbana's territory, the drive stalled and ended with sophomore kicker Warren Frevert hitting a 40 yard field goal to make the score 3-0 in favor of Jewell.

The rest of the first half was a game of field position as both teams moved the ball well for most of the second quarter. However, the Cardinal's defense kept Urbana from turning good field position into any points until late in the second quarter. At halftime, the score was 7-3 in favor of Urbana.

After two short drives by the Cardinals, Urbana's offense was able to punch in their second touchdown of the game from Jewell's 11 yard line, putting Urbana up 14-3 midway through the third quarter.

After a huge kick return that gave Jewell their best field position of the day, Jewell's offense was able to gain some momentum towards the end of the third quarter. However, after a 35 yard pass from sophomore quarterback Sean Shelton to senior wide receiver Harrison Blue, Jewell's offense was unable to move the ball in the red zone. Warren Frevert capped off the drive with yet another field goal to make the score 14-6 at the end of the third quarter.

While this would be the Cardinal's last productive drive of the game, turnovers would give Urbana a short field on two occasions leading to a field goal and a touchdown, which would result in the final score of 24-6 in favor of the Urbana Blue Knights.

The William Jewell Cardinals, now 1-2, will play their first road game of the season against the Pittsburg State Gorillas out of the MIAA conference of NCAA Division II. The game will be played at 7:00pm at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburgh, Kan.-Story by Kurt Hixson
