The William Jewell Cardinal softball team used two pitching gems from
Amanda Storm and
Maria Buckingham to sweep Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent University of Wisconsin-Parkside by scores of 2-1 and 2-0 in Romeoville, Ill., on Saturday. The games were played at Lewis University due to unplayable field conditions at the Case Softball Complex.
In game one the Cardinals jumped out to early lead thanks to a double by
Faith Song who scored on a key two-out double by Ashley Nation.
The Rangers were able to tie the game in the second inning when Ashley Nowdomski and Lexi Sotiros delivered a pair of one-out doubles.
The Cardinals regained the lead in the fourth when
Eileen Greenwood delivered a two-out single to bring in
Erica Scowley from second base.
Amanda Storm (2-1) allowed five hits in seven innings pitched and struck out five while only walking one and giving up one run.
Greenwood and Nation each finished with one RBI and one hit a piece for Jewell.
Ranger pitcher Kristen Kleinmeyer suffered the loss going the distance and allowing just two runs. She walked only one batter and allowed six hits.
In game two the Cardinals were able to keep the Rangers offense at bay thanks to a complete game shutout from senior
Maria Buckingham.
The Cardinals again took an early lead in the opening frame when Song walked and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. Song scored on a groundout by Storm.
The Rangers threatened in the sixth with a two-out bases loaded rally. Buckingham was up to the task as she delivered a strikeout to end the inning.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the top of the seventh before Buckingham retired the Rangers in order to end the game.
Buckingham (4-2) allowed one hit while striking out seven and walking four. Parkside starter Kelynn Sporer was solid in defeat allowing two runs, while striking out four and walking four.
Greenwood and
Lexy Rozmus each contributed a hit for Jewell offensively.
The Cardinals, 8-5 on the season will take on Lewis University on Sunday, March 11 at 10:00 a.m. in Romeoville, Ill.
