Cards Split Doubleheader with Maryville

The William Jewell College softball team hosted fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Maryville University and fell 3-2 in game one before earning a split with an 8-7 win in game two on Sunday in Liberty, Mo.

In game one, The Lady Saints were able to grab a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, third and sixth innings respectively. 

The Cardinals offense then came to life in the bottom of the sixth thanks to RBI hits from Rachel Hayden and Taylor Brown

Maryville retired the Cards in order in the bottom of the seventh to hang on for the 3-2 win. 

Amanda Storm (2-3) pitched six innings giving up eight hits and three runs while striking out six and walking one. 

Hayden finished the game two for three with an RBI and a run scored for Jewell. 

In game two, the Cardinals jumped out to 6-0 lead with three runs in the first and second inning respectively.  That lead held all the way until the top of the seventh when Maryville exploded for 7 runs to take a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. 

In the seventh, Brown hit a solo homer to tie things up at seven.  Jewell then loaded the bases and Eileen Greenwood delivered the game winning RBI with a single.

Maria Buckingham pitched six and a third giving up 11 hits and 6 runs while striking out ten and walking three.  Hayden (3-3) earned the win pitching the last two thirds of the seventh inning.

Emily Cline went two for three with three RBI's and a run scored and Hayden went two for three with two runs scored for Jewell. 

The Cardinals, 10-9 on the year will take on Newman University on Wednesday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. in Wichita, Kan.
