The William Jewell College softball team was swept in a doubleheader today against Rockhurst University, winning the opening game 5-4 and downing the Cardinals 12-4 in game two.
Rockhurst took a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Jewell was able to score three runs and had the tying run on third with two out before the Hawks closed the game out 5-4.
The Cards (21-20, 14-14 GLVC) were led offensively by
Faith Song who went 2-4 with a run scored while
Taylor Brown was 1-3 with a walk and two RBI's.
Senior
Maria Buckingham (13-9) took the loss for Jewell in game one, pitching seven innings and giving up only four hits, five earned runs and five strikeouts.
In game two, Rockhurst jumped to a 4-0 lead against Buckingham (13-10), who went three innings as the starter and took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits. The Cardinals, though, scored three in the bottom of the first but that was the closest the Cards would get as Rockhurst would go on to score 8 unanswered runs for the 12-4 winning margin.
The Cardinals will look to rebound against Newman University on Thursday, April 19 in Wichita, Kan., at 2:00 p.m.
