The William Jewell College volleyball team opened the Tarleton Invitational Volleyball Tournament with two victories on the first day of action on Friday. The Cardinals took down Tarleton State University (23-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-11) and Lubbock Christian University (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 26-28, 15-12) by identical 3-2 scores.
In the opener against Tarleton State, Jewell benefited greatly from the play of senior
Hannah Herndon and newcomer
Libby Ording. Herndon led the attack with 12 kills and Ording added 10. Setter
Cailynn Hayter registered 21 assists for Jewell.
Spearheading the defensive effort against the Texans were
Katie Damgar and Herndon with 18 and 17 digs respectively.
Jewell's sound defense continued in the second match of the day as the squad combined for 100 digs to hold Lubbock Christian University to a .150 attack percentage. Damgar led the defensive effort with 30 digs while Hayter and
Kaylee Marquardt, chipped in with 17 and 14, respectively.
Registering a strong all-around effort, Herndon took team-high honors in kills with 19 while
Jordan Jackson registered 12. Hayter helped the cause with 28 assists.
The Cardinals, 3-3 on the year, will look to keep the momentum going on day two of the tournament when they face Texas A&M-Commerce at 9:30 a.m. and Incarnate Word at 2:30 p.m.
