The William Jewell Cardinals swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Maryville University on Friday in Liberty, Mo. Jewell won 3-0 in game one and 9-8 in game two.
In game one, the Cardinals used a strong pitching performance from
Rachel Hayden (3-2) to improve to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC. Hayden tossed a complete game one hitter striking out four.
Lexy Rozmus provided the offensive firepower as she belted a two-run home run.
In game two, Jewell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead only to see Maryville come back and tie the game at four. Jewell led 7-4 heading into the top of the sixth before Maryville exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. The Cards tied it up in the bottom of the inning and held Maryville a scoreless seventh.
After one out, Jewell's
Megan Risetter hit her second home run of the game to give Jewell the 9-8 win.
The Cardinals, 8-9 and 3-2 in GLVC play, will host University of Missouri-St. Louis for a doubleheader tomorrow in Liberty. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
