Cards Split Twinbill in Joplin

The William Jewell College softball team traveled to Joplin, Mo., on Saturday to participate in the Missouri Southern 2013 Border Battle.  The Cardinals defeated University of Nebraska-Kearney 6-2 in game one and fell 11-2 in five innings against Missouri Western State University in the nightcap.

In game one the Cardinals took control early jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.  Annali Dolman hit a two-run single to key the first inning spark.  The Cards scored two more in the top of the fifth as Dolman collected another RBI in that inning.   Dolman finished the game 2-3 with three RBI and Rachel Hayden went 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Corrine Frei earned the win by tossing a complete game four hitter giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out seven.

The Cardinals were not as fortunate in game two against Missouri Western.   The Griffons jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Cards cut it to 3-2 off a two-run double by Eileen Greenwood

Missouri Western then exploded for eight runs in the top of the top of third to put the game out of reach.

Kahli Barrett (0-1) took the loss for Jewell going 2.1 innings giving up eight hits, eight runs (seven earned) and walking two. 

The Cards will continue play tomorrow in the Border Battle as they take on University of Central Missouri at 10:00 a.m. followed by a match up against Pittsburg State at 4:00 p.m.
