Cardinals Swept in Quincy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The William Jewell Cardinals were swept in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday against Quincy University in Quincy, Il.  The Cards fell 1-0 in game one and dropped a 4-3 extra inning affair in game two.  Jewell currently stands at 18-13 overall and 11-6 in GLVC.

In game one, the Cardinals had their ten game winning streak snapped falling 1-0.  With the game scoreless in the bottom of the seventh Alanna Viken reached second base on an error.  After being sacrificed to the third Jessica Grimes singled her home for the winning run.

Rachel Hayden (7-3) took the loss for Jewell in relief of Faith Song.  Song pitched 4.2 innings giving up three hits and three walks while striking out one. 

Wendy Macias earned the win for Quincy pitching a complete game giving up four hits and two walks while striking out 12.

In game two Jewell got off to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Faith Song.  Quincy scored two in the bottom of the second and held the 2-1 advantage all the way to seventh when Jewell sent the game into extra innings with an RBI single from Ashley Barrett.  Barrett then scored off an error in the top of the ninth to give Jewell a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame.

Viken led off the inning with a homer to tie things up and then Grimes hit a one out double.  Sarah Martinez pinch ran for Grimes and advanced to third on a ground out to second.  Martinez then scored the winning run off a wild pitch.

Corrine Frei (4-4) pitched 8.2 innings giving up five hits and four runs while striking out five.  Barrett finished the game with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Cardinals will take on University of Illinois-Springfield at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
