Cards Take Two From Illinois-Springfield

The William Jewell College softball team got back to their winning ways by taking two from University of Illinois-Springfield on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.  Jewell won game one 8-5 and shut out the Prairie Stars 7-0 in game two.  Jewell improves to 20-13 and 13-6 in GLVC play. 

In game one, Rachel Hayden hit a grand slam home run in the top of the eighth to break up a 4-4 tie.  UIS scored one in the bottom of the frame but it was not enough as the Cards held on for the win.  Hayden finished with two hits and four RBI's and Ashley Barrett had three hits and an RBI.

Faith Song (8-3) earned the win in relief of Hayden.  Hayden tossed six innings giving up five hits and four runs while striking out six. 

In game two it was all William Jewell.  The Cards scored one in the third, four in the fifth and two in the sixth. 

Hayden collected three more hits and two RBI's while Rachel Potvin collected three hits with two runs scored. 

Corrine Frei was outstanding on the mound for Jewell as she tossed a complete game three hit shutout.  She struck out seven UIS batters and walked only three.

The Cardinals will host Newman University on Tuesday, April 16 in non-conference action with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
