William Jewell softball had arguably their best day of the season Tuesday as they pounded Rockhurst in a pair of GLVC games in Liberty, winning the first game 13-3 in five innings and winning the second 12-4 in five innings.
The Cardinals (10-11, 5-4 GLVC) used an 11-run first inning in game one and a six-run first inning in game two to set the pace.
In game one, Jewell scored 11 times in sending 14 players to the plate, coming up with nine hits and aided by three Hawk errors in the inning. The highlight of the inning was
Faith Song's three-run homer with two outs, but
Rachel Hayden had two hits and two runs batted in during the inning, and Song also had two hits and a total of four RBI in the inning.
Song also pitched 4.1 innings to pick up her third win in the circle, giving up three runs on five hits. Corrinne Frei struck out the final two hitters in closing the game.
Hayden and
Brittany Madsen had three hits in the game, as the Cardinals piled up 11 hits in the game.
Game two had a similar feel, as Jewell jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first frame, highlighted by Madsen's grand-slam home run and
Lexy Rozmus's solo home run immediately afterward, but Rockhurst (14-9, 4-5) got back into the game and trailed 7-4 after three innings. The Cardinals responded with a five-run fourth inning, including
Kelsey Teneycke's three-run homer, in gaining a 12-4 advantage and allowed Jewell to end the game after five innings with the win.
Hayden had another three hits in the second game, including another RBI, and finished the day 6-6 with four RBI, two doubles and five runs scored. song added a pair of RBI as well.
Frei was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing 1 run on one hit and striking out five over three innings.
The Cardinals will host Southwest Baptist University at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, before returning to GLVC play Saturday and Sunday against Illinois-Springfield and Quincy.
