Box Score 2 Cardinal softball won their sixth straight and eighth of their last ten in sweeping Illinois-Springfield 10-6 and 6-2 on Saturday in Liberty.
Jewell (14-11, 7-4 GLVC) didn't have the best of starts, falling behind the Prairie Stars 4-0 after the first half inning. With pitcher
Rachel Hayden struggling early, the Cardinals had to rely on their offense to scratch back into the game with two runs in the second inning, two runs in the third inning, a single run in the fifth inning, and then a big five-run inning in the sixth inning to seal the win.
The Cardinals hit four home runs in the game: Megan Rissetter had a two-run homer to score Jewell's first runs,
Faith Song hit a line drive two-run homer to tie the game in the third inning,
Annali Dolman had a solo shot in the sixth inning, and
Brittany Madsen hit a three-run homer in the sixth.
Hayden, who allowed the four first-inning runs on two hits and three walks, settled in to pick up the win (5-3) pitching six innings, allowing a total of five runs on seven hits and five walks, striking out two.
Corinne Frei finished the game by giving up a run in the seventh but fanning three hitters.
In the second game, starting pitcher Song allowed just one run on three hits through six innings in picking up the win (5-3). She walked four, but the Cardinals made no errors in the game, and Frei once again finished the game by allowing one run and striking out two.
Offensive highlights in game two included a two-run single by
Kelsey Teneycke, a two-run double by Risetter, and an RBI double by Song.
The Cardinals take on Quincy University at home Sunday starting at noon.
