The William Jewell College volleyball team fell to Bellermine University, 3-1, on Saturday, in the Cardinals' home opener. Senior setter
Cailynn Hayter posted a double-double, recording 27 assists and 10 digs. With the victory, the Knights improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 1-9. The game also marked the Cardinals' first action in the Great Lakes Valley Conference for 2013.
The Knights took a hard fought 2-0 set lead by taking the first set 25-21 and 25-23 in the second. Jewell, responded by taking the third 26-24 but fell 25-19 in the fourth and deciding set.
Lauren Holm and
Kaylee Marquardt led the Cardinals offensively with 10 kills and six and nine digs respectively.
Kelsey Wagner and
Libby Ording notched nine kills each for Jewell. Defensively, Jewell was led by senior
Katie Damgar, who contributed 28 digs.
Bellarmine held a 56-to-50 advantage in kills for the match and notched 9 service aces to the Cardinals four. The Knights were led by Madison Tinder, who posted 16 kills on the afternoon.
The Cardinals will host University of Southern Indiana on Sunday, September 22 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mabee Center on Jewell campus in Liberty, Mo.
