Cardinal football pulled off one of the biggest wins in recent memory, rallying from a 17-0 deficit on the road at Truman State to win 21-17 and remain undefeated in the Great Lakes Valley Conference race at 3-0.
It was Truman's
(4-2, 3-1 GLVC)Â first conference loss of the season, and broke a four-game Bulldog winning streak.
According to Jewell head football coach
Jerod Kruse, it was the Cardinals' first win over the Bulldogs in 91 years.
Jewell turned missed opportunities in the first half into second-half points, scoring on a two yard
Glen Whitney touchdown run and a 27 yard
Nick West to
Anthony Mullins touchdown pass in the third quarter, with West scrambling for a 10 yard touchdown to give Jewell (3-3, 3-0) the lead with 12:37 left in the game.
The Cardinal defense stifled the Bulldog offense in the second half as well. ,
Truman lost their starting quarterback, DeVonte Black, late in the second quarter, and the Cardinals were able to shut down the running attack of Garrett White, the GLVC's second-leading rusher. The Cardinals also survived a successful Bulldog fake punt late in the game.
West was 17-26 in the air for 208 yards and no interceptions along with touchdowns running and throwing; Mullins had five catches for 135 yards and a touchdown.
Eric Jackson and
Jimmy DeStefano each had 11 tackles for Jewell, and
Austin Doss and
Nick Messer each had 10. Jackson and Marquis Moye each had two sacks, as the Cardinals had six sacks in the game.
Quinlan Riser had his third interception in three games.
Jewell's 3-0 conference mark makes them one of two teams undefeated in the conference, with Indianapolis playing later tonight.
The Cardinals were picked last in the GLVC preseason poll. They travel to Missouri S&T next Saturday.
