The William Jewell College football team dropped their first Great Lakes Valley Conference game of the season losing 42-28 at home against Quincy University on Saturday. Jewell falls to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the GLVC while Quincy improves to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the GLVC.
Jewell got on the board first during their second possession of the game when
Nick West hit
Travae Jones for a 36 yard touchdown strike to put Jewell up 7-0.
Quincy answered back with three straight touchdowns before Dermarcus Robinson rushed one in from three yards out for Jewell to cut the lead to 21-14.
Quincy's quarterback Nick Lonergan then found D.J. Daughtry for a 46 yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds to go until halftime to put the Hawks up 28-14 at the half.
On the first play of the Cardinals second possession of the third quarter West hit
Anthony Mullins for a 60 yard touchdown score that put Jewell within 7 points after the extra point.
The Cardinals tied the game at 28-28 when
Glen Whitney scored from one yard out after forcing a turnover deep in their own territory on a drive that went seven plays for 76 yards.
Quincy then put the game away with two rushing touchdowns by Chris Harris from 21 and 6 yards out respectively.
West finished the game 21 for 37 for 350 yards and two touchdowns but four costly interceptions.
Mullins hauled in 8 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown to lead Jewell in receiving.
Defensively,
Quinlan Riser led the Cards with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Andrew Pence had three tackles and an interception while
Glen Whitney finished the game with two sacks.
Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Lebanon, Ill., on Saturday, November 1 to take on McKendree University at 1:00 p.m.
