William Jewell College suffered its second consecutive loss, and second consecutive loss inside the Great Lakes Valley Conference, losing to McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois Saturday afternoon 41-20.
The loss puts the Cardinal hopes for a GLVC championship in serious jeopardy, trailing conference leader Indianapolis by two games in the standings with two games left in the season.
Jewell rallied from a 20-3 deficit late in the half when
Nick West struck from 23 yards out with a touchdown pass to
Anthony Mullins. Â The score with only five seconds left, followed by a third quarter field goal by
Brandon Womack, a fumble recovery on the kickoff, and another West to Mullins scoring pass tied the game at 20 with 9:13 left in the third quarter.
The game, though, was dominated by the Bearcats (3-6, 3-4 in the GLVC) the rest of the way, with two scoring runs in the third quarter and a scoring pass late in the game to stretch the lead to 21 points.
The Cardinals (4-5, 4-2) were led in rushing by
Trejuan Mask with 103 yards and Mullins' 78 yards receiving with two scores. Â
Jimmy DeStefano had 14 tackles and
Thomas Clanton had 13 tackles. Â The Cardinals had three fumble recoveries, and only turned the ball over once in the game.
McKendree sacked Jewell quarterbacks five times, and had 11 tackles for losses.
The Cardinals host Saint Joseph's College next Saturday at 1:00.
