Behind the running of Kobi Cook, Wade Burton and Braxton Shelton, Saint Joseph's spoiled William Jewell College's senior day with a 49-7 win over the Cardinals in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Pumas (7-3, 4-3 GLVC) opened the game with a seven play 78-yard drive that saw Burton take it to the house from 41 yards out to put the Puma's up 7-0.
After a Jewell three and out and the Cardinals appeared to gain momentum when
Nick Messer picked off Burton and returned it to the St. Joseph 30 yard line. The Cards picked up 8 yards on the drive and
Brandon Womack's 39 yard field goal attempt went wide left.
The Pumas then went on a 13 play 78 yard drive capped off by a ten yard touchdown run from Mike Anderson and St. Joseph's led 14-0.
Jewell found themselves driving to begin the second quarter only to see them backed up by penalty after a long gain deep in Puma territory. Running back
Trejuan Mask then fumbled on the next play and St. Joseph's took over at the Cardinal 48 yard line.
The Puma's then punched it in eight plays later on an eight yard run from Braxton Shelton to put the Puma's up 21-0.
Quarterback
Nick West was intercepted on the ensuing drive and Burton was able to connect two plays later on a touchdown pass to Addi Dellinger for a commanding 28-0 lead.
Jewell's next possession produced the lone offensive highlight of the game when West connected with
Anthony Mullins who broke several tackles for a 45 yard scoring strike to cut the lead to 28-7.
Burton found Dellinger again just before halftime from five yards out to give the Puma's a 35-7 halftime lead.
St. Joseph's tacked on a score in the third and fourth quarter respectively to produce the winning 49-7 margin.
West finished the contest 7 for 19 for 91 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Jewell. The Pumas did not have a 100 yard rusher but as a team they were able to rush for 274 yards on the afternoon.
Defensively,
Jimmy DeStefano led the Cards with 10 tackles and Marc Baumgartner,
Eric Jackson and
Austin Doss each contributed in a sack on the game.
