The William Jewell College men's basketball team traveled to Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Rockhurst for the first conference game of the year Thursday night. The Cards prevailed, winning 85- 79 which moves them to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in GLVC play. 

Jewell began the game on an 11-5 run, but the Hawks quickly came back to tie it. Jewell went on several more runs in the first half, which put them up 44-39 at the break. 

In the second half Jewell built their largest lead of the game with 11:48 to play when Patrick Whelan hit a three-pointer and the Cards were able to hang on for the hard fought six point victory. 

Jewell dominated the boards with 47 total (17 offensive and 30 defensive), while Rockhurst had 28 (6 offensive and 22 defensive).

Darius Tomlin lead the Cardinals in scoring, with 21 while Christian Hildebrant contributed 18.

Hildebrandt and Emil Ostafiiciuc both tied for the team lead in rebounds for Jewell with 9 apiece. D'Vante Mosby and Muusa Dama both finished with 8 boards.

Rockhurst's leading scorer was Josh Roberts, who put up 18 points. The Hawks leading rebounders were Russell Burns and Joshua Brannon, who both had 6.

The Cardinals return to the Mabee Center for a non-conference matchup against NCCAA Central Christian College of The Bible on Monday night at 7:30.
