Cards Fall to Northeastern, Handle Bacone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The William Jewell College softball team concluded weekend play splitting a doubleheader with Northeastern State (9-2 loss) and Bacone College (9-1 win) to finish the second weekend of play with a 2-2 record and now stand at 4-6 overall on the young season.

In game one at Northeastern, the Cards fell behind,1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.  Jewell then responded with a run in the top of the second when Kelsey Morgan slammed home a solo home run and Faith Song delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to give the Cardinals a brief 2-1 lead. 

The Riverhawks responded with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings before exploding for five runs in the sixth.   
Starting pitcher Faith Song (1-0) took the loss for Jewell tossing  5.2 innings and struck out three, while allowing nine runs (five earned), 10 hits and issuing two walks.
 
In game two at Riverhawks Park against Bacone, the Cardinals got on the board early thanks to a double by Morgan who drove in Ashley Barrett. 

Bacone tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second before Jewell's bats came alive in the bottom frame by scoring six runs highlighted by a three-run home run by Morgan.  Jewell scored single runs in the fourth and six to produce the game winning score of 9-1. 

Cards starter Corrine Frei yielded the only runs to Bacone while pitching 2.1 innings.  Kahli Barrett got her first win of her collegiate career coming in a relief appearance. She came in the third, inheriting the bases loaded and was able to pitch out of that jam and went on to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.

Morgan finished game two going 2-2 with a run scored and five RBI's.

The Cards will head to Joplin, Mo., on March 1 for a tournament at Missouri Southern State University.
