Card Softball Splits at Home Against USI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Jewell softball split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Monday against Southern Indiana University, dropping the first game 5-4 and winning the second game 3-1.

In the first game, Jewell's Kelsey Morgan unloaded a grand slam home run in the first inning giving the Cardinals a 4-0 lead with Faith Song in the circle, but the Eagles battled back with two runs against Song in the fourth inning and another three runs in the fifth inning, chasing Song from the circle.  Corinne Frei came on in relief and gave up an RBI single, but struck out five on 2 1/3 innings with no decision.  Song took the loss and is 3-6 on the year.

The Cardinals matched USI with four hits in the game.  Each team made two errors and USI turned a double play.

In game two, Southern Indiana jumped to a 1-0 lead against Rachel Hayden, but could do little else against the senior.  The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Morgan sacrifice fly, and it was Hayden who supplied the winning runs with a two-run bomb to leftfield in the fifth inning to break the tie and ultimately give the Cardinals the win.

Hayden was superb in the circle as well, allowing four hits and just the one run, walking none and striking out one.  She retired the last 14 hitters she faced in the game to take the win and run her pitching record to 2-3.  Morgan had nine assists at third base in the game.

With the split, USI goes to 9-5 on the year and 2-4 in the GLVC.  The Cardinals head into a non-conference doubleheader at 2:00 Thursday with a 6-10 record, and are 2-4 in the GLVC.

Jewell plays at Drury on Saturday and Missouri S&T on Sunday to continue GLVC play.
