Softball Splits at Drury

The William Jewell Cardinal softball team traveled to Springfield, Mo., today take on Drury University, splitting the doubleheader, with game one going to the Cards and the Panthers taking game two.

In game one, the Cards jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first, stringing together a series of hits.  The offense continued into the third inning, where the Cardinals added three more runs on a Brittany Madsen double and an Aerin Creamer single.  The Cardinals, added five more runs in the top half of the fourth, as they batted around their line-up.

The Panthers had no answer for the Cardinals offensive firepower as the Cards took the first decision 12-0, only needed five innings. 

Brittany Madsen led the way for the Cardinals, going 3-3 with two doubles and four RBI.  Faith Song had a solid day at the dish, going 3-4 with one RBI, while Kelsey Teneycke and Aerin Creamer both had two RBI apiece.  

Fresh off her no-hitter, Rachel Hayden (4-3) got the win for the Cards, pitching all five innings, striking out four and scattering four hits. 

In game two, the offense was not as abundant for the Cardinals, as the Panthers took the contest 4-1.

The Panthers struck early, scoring three in the bottom of the first and running starting pitcher Faith Song out of the circle after just a third of an inning of work.  

The Cardinals scored their lone run in the fifth, when Song plated home Annali Dolman off a single, to give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.  The Panthers would then add an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning, giving them the 4-1 edge. 
The Cardinals managed only five hits in the nightcap.

Song (3-7) took the loss for the Cards, giving up three runs (all earned), off four hits, while only facing five batters.  Rachel Hayden came in relief pitching the rest of the game for the Cards.  She gave up three hits and one run.
   
The Cards (8-12, 3-5) travel to Rolla, Mo., on Sunday to take on the University of Missouri S &T Miners in a doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
