Cardinals Split Doubleheader with No. 10 UMSL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The William Jewell Cardinals' softball team traveled to St. Louis, Mo., for the weekend to face the University of Missouri at St. Louis Tritons and split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on a chilly Saturday afternoon. The Tritons are currently ranked No. 10 in the NFCA DII Coaches' Poll.

Reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Year, Hannah Perryman, no hit the Cardinals in the first matchup and the Tritons only needed five innings to put away the Cardinals with a 9-0 victory. The Tritons collected their runs by taking advantage of a leaky Cardinal defense, which committed six errors in the game.

Senior Corrine Frei received the loss for the Cards, pitching three innings, giving up five hits, and seven runs (one earned), while striking out three.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals handed the Tritons their first GLVC loss and snapped UMSL's 13-game win streak with a 3-2 victory.

UMSL scored their first run off of a solo home run in the second inning and added another run in the fourth off an error.

Ashley Barrett led off the sixth inning with a single and later scored on a Rachel Hayden double. Later in the inning, Kelsey Morgan launched a two-run homer to straight away centerfield to give the Cardinals their 3-2 advantage. Two solid defensive innings secured the win for the Cards.

Rachel Hayden got the win for the Cards going the distance. She gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits while fanning five.

William Jewell moves to 11-15 overall and 6-8 in GLVC play. They will travel across town to face Maryville University in a conference doubleheader on Sunday with the first pitch to be thrown at 12:00 p.m.
