Box Score 2 William Jewell College senior
Rachel Hayden went 2-for-4 with a two RBIs in the first game, as the Cardinals swept a double header against Maryville University today in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo. Jewell won game one 5-1 and took game two 6-1.
The Cards stole the first contest, but needed extra innings to do so. The Cardinals got on the board first off a
Brittany Madsen solo homerun in the second inning. The Saints tied the game up in the sixth and both teams were unable to score in the seventh inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Cards exploded for four runs.
Kelsey Teneycke drew a leadoff walk and
Aerin Creamer followed with a single.
Ashley Barrett then came up with a single that scored the go-ahead run. The bases were loaded with one out, when Creamer scored off a wild pitch. Hayden then singled down the left field line scoring the final two runs of the innings. The Cards defense then put away the Saints in the bottom half of the inning to earn the game one win.
Offensively,
Ashley Barrett,
Kelsey Morgan, and
Rachel Hayden each went 2-4 at the plate. Barrett had an RBI and Hayden had two RBI's.
Hayden pitched all nine innings for the Cards, giving up one run, on eight hits, moving her record to 7-4 on the year.
In the second game, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning, scoring four runs.
Ashley Barrett led off the game with a double and came around to score off a double by Hayden. A fielding error on the Saints' third baseman put
Faith Song on base, scoring Hayden.
Kelsey Morgan then unleashed a two-run homerun before the Cards were retired.
In the third inning, Song hit a solo shot to extend the lead to 5-0 and Hayden singled to score
Rachel Potvin in the fifth adding insurance and giving the Cards a 6-0 lead. The Saints scored their lone run in the final inning.
Song (5-8) pitched seven innings, giving up one run on three hits for the Cards while striking out four. Offensively, Hayden went 2-4 with two RBI and
Kelsey Morgan went 2-3 with two RBI.
Next weekend, the Cardinals host GLVC foes Quincy University and newcomer Truman State University for a pair of twinbills on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6. First pitch will be thrown at 12:00 p.m. for each game.
