Cards Split GLVC Doubleheader with Lewis

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The William Jewell College Softball team traveled to Romeoville, Ill., to square off against the Lewis University Flyers in a Great Lakes Valley Confernce twinbill on Friday afternoon.

In game one, the Cardinals needed extras to put away the Flyers, winning the game 5-2 in eight innings.

Lewis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring both of their runs in the first inning.  The quiet Cardinals' bats started to wake up in the fifth inning when Faith Song doubled home Ashley Barrett to cut the Flyers' lead to one.

In the seventh with their backs against the wall, Song blasted a homerun to straightway centerfield tying up the game at 2-2 and sending the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, the Cardinals began a two-out, three-run rally.  Pinch hitter Courtney Johnson singled, but reached second on a Flyer fielding error.  Barrett then singled to score Johnson, giving the Cardinals the go-ahead run and a 3-2 lead.  Rachel Potvin then plated home Barrett on a single of her own, and Rachel Hayden singled to score Potvin giving the Cardinals insurance runs and extending the lead to 5-2.  The Cardinals defense retired the Flyers in order in the bottom half of the eighth to seal the win.

Hayden (11-4) threw another complete game earning herself the win.  She gave up two runs (both earned) on six hits, while striking out a pair.  Song paced the Cardinals offensively going 2-5 with a double, a homerun, two RBI, and scoring one run.

In the nightcap, Lewis shut out Jewell 1-0.

Lewis scored the only run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Jewell threatened in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.

Song (6-10) pitched a complete game for the Cardinals, taking the loss.  She gave up one run (earned) on five hits and struck out two.

Jewell (19-17, 12-10 GLVC) travels north to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday to take on the Rangers in a GLVC doubleheader.  The first pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
