Jewell Rallies for Dramatic Softball Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Jewell softball rallied for a bottom-of-the-seventh win in the second game of Satuday's doubleheader with Illinois-Springfield, winning 5-4 after dropping the first game 8-1 to the Prairie Stars.

Kelsey Teneycke's ground ball single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning scored pinch runner Courtney Johnson from second base, just barely avoiding a tag with a slide to the back side of the plate, giving the Cardinals the win.

With the split the Cardinals are 23-19 overall and 15-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference; UIS is 22-21 overall, 13-15 in the conference.

The day did not start as nicely for the Cardinals as it ended, as the Prairie Stars scored eight runs in the first three innings of Game One on the way to an 8-1 win.  Rachel Hayden (12-6) took the loss, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing all eight runs on six hits.  Ashley Barrett's RBI double in the third inning was the only score for Jewell.

In the second game the Cardinals put together 13 hits, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to lead 3-2 on a squeeze bunt by Megan Barnes and an RBI single by Hayden in the fourth inning, only to lose the lead to UIS in the sixth inning by giving up two runs.  A single run in the sixth inning on an infield single by Rachel Potvin tied things at four-all, and Teneycke's game winning hit in the seventh gave the win to Jewell.

Faith Song (7 innings, 4 runs, 7 hits) got the complete game win to go 9-10 on the year.  She got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning with a 1-2-3 double play ball to end the inning.  Song also pitched 2.1 innings of relief in Game One, retiring 10 of 11 hitters she faced.

Potvin was 3-4 in the second game; Ashley Barrett had a solo home run.

The Cardinals continue in GLVC play Tuesday at Rockhurst.
