Box Score 2 Starting the final weekend of the regular season and with a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament in their sights, the Jewell softball team dominated Drury at home Friday, sweeping the Panthers 5-1 and 8-1.
The wins unofficially qualify the Cardinals for the postseason tournament next week in East Peoria, Illinois.
Jewell put together a four run fourth-inning in game one, highlighted by
Faith Song's three-run home run to centerfield. The Cardinals had 11 hits in the game, which included RBI singles for
Rachel Hayden and
Ashley Barrett.
Rachel Potvin had three infield hits in the game,
Kelsey Teneycke had two hits and Song added a double.
Rachel Hayden went the distance in the circle for her 13th win (13-7), limiting the Panthers to one run on eight hits, walking three and striking out five. Jewell made no errors in the game.
In game two,
Faith Song held Drury to two hits and one run in going the distance for her 10th win (10-11), walking three. Song did not strike out a hitter, but made three sterling plays on hard comebackers to the circle; the Cardinals had one error and turned one double play.
Offensively, Hayden drove in two runs with a first-inning triple. Barrett went 3-4, driving in a run with a triple and adding a double as well. Potvin added an RBI singel, Song had an RBI single, and
Melanie Golubski hit her first home run as a Cardinal as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning.
Jewell is 25-21 overall, 17-13 in the GLVC. Drury falls to 13-26, 11-21 in the conference.
The Cardinals host Missouri S&T Saturday at 1:00.
