The William Jewell College women's basketball team hosted Drury University this afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference show down. The Cardinals used a three point advantage to hand Drury their first conference loss of the season winning 80-64. Jewell improves to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the GLVC while the Panthers fall to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the GLVC.
The scoring went back and forth for with Jewell leading 22-18 midway through the first half only to see Drury go on a 7-0 run to take a 25-22 lead with 5:20 to play. Senior
Hayli Jo Smith hit a three to tie the game and spurred an 18-6 run to give the Cardinals a 43-31 halftime lead. The Cards also converted 11-12 free throws in the first half as the Panthers found themselves in foul trouble for much of the first half.
The second half saw a series of runs by both teams with the most important run by the Cardinals after the final media timeout. Jewell led 64-56 and went on a 11-0 run that included 3-three pointers to put them up 19 with under two minutes to play. The Panthers came into the game averaging only 10 turnovers a game but the Cardinals forced 15 on the afternoon.
Jewell also shot 12-29 from three point land while they held Drury to 2-16 on the game.
Four players scored in double figures for Jewell with
Logan Antenen leading the way with 15.
Aerial Smith scored 14 while Chris Keys added 12 and
Katie Finn contributed 10.
The Cardinals will travel to Kirksville, Mo., on Thursday January 22 to take on Truman State University for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
