The Cardinal Track & Field teams have just returned from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska for the second time in two weeks. On January 10, the teams competed in the Ward Haylett Invitational and in the Scott Nisely Memorial Classic on January 17.
In a matter of two weeks, five school records have fallen. Gretchen Mayes broke the school record in the 60 Meters with a time of 7.96 seconds. In doing so, she became the first female student-athlete at Jewell to break eight seconds in that event. She also broke the long jump record with a jump of 5.43 meters (17' 9-3/4") and then broke it the following week by jumping 5.55 meters (18' 2-1/2"). Mayes is a mere two centimeters from hitting the NCAA-II Provisional Qualifying mark of 5.57 meters and is currently ranked first in the GLVC in that event. Julia Parker followed suit by breaking the high jump record with a jump of 1.62 meters (5' 3-3/4") and is currently ranked third in the GLVC. Jessica Goldsberry placed second in the 400 Meters with a time of 59.16 seconds and is currently ranked second in the GLVC. Dylan Zinszer placed second in the 800 Meters with a time of 2:32.57 which ranks her fifteenth in the GLVC.
On the men's side,
Alec Whiteside also joined in the record breaking fun by taking down a mark previously held by assistant throws coach
Brad Begemann with a toss of 16.48 meters (54' 1"). Alec's mark currently ranks him fourth in the GLVC.
Blake Alexander became the first this season to hit the NCAA-II Provisional Qualifying time. He placed 2nd in the 60 Hurdles posting a time of 8.24 seconds which currently ranks him first in the GLVC and twenty-first in the nation.
Travae Jones made his debut in the 400 Meters with a second place finish posting a time of 52.75 seconds.
As classes begin this week, the Cardinals will take the weekend off from competition but will be back in action with the Mule Relays hosted by the University of Central Missouri on January 30-31.
