Volleyball Finishes 2-1 at Crossover with Win Over Malone

The William Jewell volleyball team wrapped up the eighth annual Mizuno Midwest Regional Crossover with a win over Malone University 3-1 on Saturday. The win takes Jewell to 7-15 on the season, including going 2-1 in the tournament.

Set one was a back-and-forth affair with Malone coming out on top in extra points, 27-25. The Cardinals posted a .306 attack percentage with 15 kills on 36 attempts while committing just four errors in the opening frame, but late defensive miscues cost the set.

Jewell continued their hot hitting in set two as they again grabbed 15 kills and four errors but this time held the Pioneers to a .054 attack percentage to grab the set two win 25-20.

Both teams slipped offensively in set three but Jewell remained at the .200 mark with a game-high 16 kills. A back-and-forth set, neither team held a lead large than three points. With the score tied at 23 freshman Jenna Rau knocked down two kills to give Jewell the 25-23 win.

Set four started with Jewell opening up a 4-1 lead only to see Malone tie the game at eight. With the score knotted at nine, the Cardinals began to separate themselves and never looked back as they opened up a 20-11 lead. Malone managed five consecutive kills to get back within six points before two kills and a block by the Cardinals combined with two Pioneer errors secured the match 25-16.

Freshman Jenna Rau shined in her first action in since September 15 as she posted a career-high 16 kills while committing just one error for a .469 attack percentage. Kaylee Marquardt and Raechel Meisinger also had double-digit kills with 15 and 10 respectively.

Defensively the Cardinals had four players with double-digit digs led by freshman libero Olivia Tolberd with a career-high 27 followed by Alix Weigel with 17, Amy Lindhorst with 14, and Stefanie Richterkessing with 10. Richterkessing also posted a career-high 45 assists.

As a team Jewell hit .262 for the match with 58 total kills. The Cardinals also combined to total six service aces, and eight block assists, with Cunningham and Grace Miller each having one block solo.

Up next, Jewell will jump back into Great Lakes Valley Conference play next weekend with a trip to St. Louis to take on Missouri-St. Louis on Friday at 7:00 p.m. followed by a showdown with Maryville on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
