The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Missouri-St. Louis Friday night 25-18, 25-22, 25-20. The loss takes the Cardinals to 7-16 overall, 1-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Tritons jumped out to leads in each of the three sets before Jewell crawled back in to match to make things interesting towards the end.
Set two saw UMSL grab a 6-0 lead before Jewell got on the board, scoring four of the next five on kills from
Raechel Meisinger and
Jenna Rau to pull the game back within three. The two teams traded four-point runs late in the set but the intitial deficit was too much to overcome for the young Cardinals.
Set three was a back-and-forth affair. With the Cardinals trailing 17-16 UMSL went on a three point run on a kill from Carly Ochs combined with two Jewell errors. The Cardinals again battled in the end but the Tritons scored the final three points to take the set and the match.
Meisinger led all players with 12 kills, followed by
Paige Cunningham with eight.
Stefanie Richterkessing posted a game-high 27 assists while
Olivia Tolberd totaled 19 digs.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow at Maryville at 3:00 p.m. The Saints, who fell to No. 9 Rockhurst Friday, will enter the contest with a GLVC record identical to Jewell at 1-9.
