The William Jewell volleyball team fell in four sets to Northwood University (Mich.) 25-23, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 at the Mizuno Midwest Regional Crossover on Saturday. The loss drops Jewell to 6-15 on the season.
The Cardinals had an early five point deficit before a
Kaylee Marquardt kill and Northwood error got Jewell back within three at 19-16. The Timberwolves pushed the lead back to five before three errors combined with an
Alix Weigel ace and kills from
Raechel Meisinger and
Paige Cunningham tied the set at 22. Cunningham closed the first set with a kill and solo block as the Cardinals battled back for the victory 25-23.
Jewell came out firing in the second set and built a lead as large as eight points behind kills from Cunningham,
Grace Miller, and
Emily Burton. However the tide quickly changed as Northwood came roaring back to tie the game at 17. The Timberwolves took their first lead of the set at 21-20 on a Jewell error and used their big blocking game to take the set 25-20.
Set three was all Northwood as the Cardinals fell 25-14. In the final set Jewell dug an early four point whole before battling back to get within two. Each time Jewell made a run of points however, they counted with a string of errors that allowed Northwood to take the set 25-19.
Cunningham was again a bright spot for Jewell posting her second double-double of the weekend with 10 kills and 13 digs to go along with six blocks. Meisinger also had nine kills while Burton, Miller, and Marquardt each posted six. Freshman setter
Stefanie Richterkessing added 36 assists and nine digs.
Defensively,
Olivia Tolberd grabbed 21 digs while
Alix Weigel also totaled 16.
The Cardinals will close out the Mizuno Midwest Regional Crossover this evening as they take on Malone University of the GLIAC at 4:00 p.m.
