Volleyball Falls to Quincy

The William Jewell volleyball team fell to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Friday after dropping a match to Quincy University 3-0.

Set one saw the Cardinals jump out to an early lead before Quincy battled back to a 22-22 tie. Late errors by Jewell proved costly as the Hawks took the set 25-22.

In set two Quincy jumped to a quick lead that grew as large as seven points at times. Each time the Hawks pushed the lead further Jewell would go on a small run to bring the game back within reach, only to have a missed serve squash the rally. With the score at 24-16 Jewell would put together their best run of the night, aided by three Quincy errors and pull within three before the Hawks would seal the set 25-21.

The final set was much like the second with Quincy jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead forcing Jewell to battle from behind. Again late in the set with Jewell down 24-16 the Cardinals put together a small run to pull within 24-19 before Quincy finished the match.

Freshman setter Stefanie Richterkessing had an all-around game with 27 assists, 12 digs, and three service aces. Senior Kaylee Marquardt led the Cardinals with 11 kills on 37 attempts to go along with seven digs. Raechel Meisinger also added nine kills and 11 digs with Kelsey Wagner and Grace Miller each chipping in six kills.

The two teams played fairly evenly but the strong right side combination of Quincy's Rachel Rush and Bekah Raebel were too much as the two players combined for 20 of the Hawks' 42 kills.

Up next for the Cardinals is home matchup with Truman State University on Saturday. With it being homecoming week on the William Jewell campus, the game will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
