Brandon Womack is 3-3 in game winning kicks this season, adding yet another clincher to his resume on Saturday as Jewell football held off Lincoln University 34-31 in Jefferson City, Missouri.
The junior's kick came from the left hashmark 30 yards away with no time left on the clock. Â It capped a day in which the Cardinal offense shined for a half, but the Cardinal defense was under pressure in the second half.
Jewell scored on Tre Mask's one-yard reception to open the game with a 7-0 lead, and extended the lead on two
Thomas Cook, Jr. runs of 38 and 6 yards, along with a Womack 28 yard field goal, to lead at half 24-14.
The second half opened with
Justice Taylor's second interception of the game, along with his 46 yard return for a touchdown, to push the lead to 31-14. Â The Blue Tigers (1-9, 0-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference), though, made a change in quarterback as they went to sophomore Dennis Vinson, and the game turned at that point with Vinson leading :Lincoln to 17 straight points to tie the game at 31.
The Cardinal defense, despite giving up the points, was mostly solid after Lincoln pulled to within 31-24 with 5:12 left in the third quarter.  Lincoln finally scored the tying touchdown on a long catch and run with 3:36 left, setting up the late game heroics by Womack.
The Cardinals started the game-winning drive with 3:31 left, going 62 yards on 11 plays highlighted by a
Nick West pass to Mask on 4th down to keep the drive alive. Â After two timeouts, Womack calmly hit his third game winning field goal of the season (all on the road), to give the Cardinals the win and push their record to 4-6 (4-4).
Defensively,
Quayde Bauman had three sacks for Jewell and led with seven tackles; Isaac Dozier and
Zach Haynes also had seven tackles.
Womack is 11-13 in field goals this year, with each miss coming on a block.
Jewell wraps up the year next Saturday at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in a 2:00 (CST) game.
