The William Jewell Cardinals defeated the Ottawa Braves 87-84 on a game-winning three pointer by
Darius Tomlin in a thrilling non-conference matchup Tuesday evening in the Mabee Center.
Â
The Braves grabbed the lead early and held on for the duration of the first half, taking a 46-44 lead into the halftime break. The two teams wrestled for the lead in the second half, with the Cardinals ultimately taking an 84-83 lead with under a minute to play. However, a Cardinal turnover and subsequent foul would allow the Braves to tie the game. This would only set the stage for Tomlin, who drilled a deep three-pointer with seconds to play to secure the win.
Â
The Cardinals displayed their prolific three-point shooting, making 14 threes on the evening. The Cardinals also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Braves 45-38.
Â
Matt Lassen led the Cardinals' offensive efforts with 24 points, 18 of them from behind the three point line.
Austin Regier tallied a double-double, scoring 22 points with 17 rebounds.
Â
Marshon Norfleet scored 16 points for the Braves. Emeka Okoronkwo and Preston Oakes chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals move to 3-5 on the season.
Â
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, December 19, as they take on Avila University at 1:00 P.M. in a non-conference duel at the Mabee Center.
