Track and Field Opens Indoor Season in Iowa

The William Jewell College track and field teams traveled to Pella, Iowa Saturday to open the 2015-16 indoor season at the Dutch Holiday Preview, hosted by Central College. The Cardinal women grabbed a third place finish with 93.5 total points, just 4.5 behind Central Methodist and Truman State who shared the title with 98 points a piece. On the men's side, Jewell finished sixth overall with 40.5 points. William Penn took home top honors with 92 points.

The Jewell women grabbed multiple top five finishes, including top honors in two events. Jessica Goldsberry won the 300 meter dash with a time of 42.31. Margaret Perko separated herself from the pack and also took home the title in the 60 meter hurdles at 9.24.

Goldsberry and Perko also helped the Cardinals to one of the team's three runner-up marks as they combined with Elaine Barella and Gretchen Mayes to grab a time of 4:17.98, good enough for second, in the 4x4 relay. Barella was also second in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:46.23.

Rounding out the running events was Mayes and Shelby Ridenhour grabbing top five finishes in the 60 meter dash, placing fourth and fifth respectively.

In the field events it was again Mayes with a second place mark in the long jump, at 5.39 meters. The Cardinals were strong in the pole vault, grabbing three of the top five marks as Judi Carter was second, followed by Rachel Forrester and Shelbie White in fourth and fifth. Emmalee Hyde finished third in the shot put with a distance of 12.06 meters while Julia Parker was fourth in the high jump at 1.60 meters.

On the men's side Blake Alexander grabbed the only event win for the Cardinals in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.34.

Alex Whiteside paced Jewell with two top five finishes on the day, placing second in the weight throw (16.29m) and fifth in the shot put (13.09m). Tristin Preston-Riley shined in the 60 meter dash, with a time of 7.12, which was third but only .10 seconds behind the first place runner.

Chris Wood (3000m) and Uriah Heady (1000m) also both placed sixth in their respective distance events.

The Cardinals are off until after the winter break, but will return with a trip to Columbia, Mo. for the Missouri Invitational, which will take place on January 15 in the Hearnes Center.
