The William Jewell College baseball team swept a season opening doubleheader over Southern Nazarene University Friday afternoon, 8-5 and 10-7. The games were played at Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla.
In the opener, the Cardinals jumped on top early 3-0 in the first inning keyed by a two run single by
Matej Sucha. Sucha finished the game with four hits and three RBI's.
Jewell plated home a single run in the third and another three run inning in the sixth to put the game away.
Hunter Brown finished the contest two for five with two RBI's and a run scored.
Junior
Austin Kretchmar (1-0) got the nod in the first game and pitched a strong 7 innings giving up three (two unearned) runs on 8 hits while striking out three.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals came from behind scoring 9 runs in the final four innings.
Jared Patton had two hits, two RBI's and two runs scored to lead the Cardinal offense in game two.
Chris Mancha (1-0) threw 2.2 innings for the victory and Rezin threw the final inning for the save.
Jewell returns to the diamond on Saturday, February 7 to conclude their three game series with Southern Nazarene. The first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 PM.
